Travelers rarely come to Cheboksary, but if, by any chance, you get to this city, there is something to see and even some interesting places for shopping.
Main attractions.
The previous photo depicts the main tourist attraction in Cheboksary according to Tripadvisor, this is a monument to mother patron of the city. You must understand now why we are so skeptical about tripadvisors and lonelyplanets: the city has many more places to see. We recommend to start with Merchant Efremov’s Boulevard: this is a tourist street selling souvenirs in the very city center.
It also has a monument to Ostap Bender, the protagonist of The Twelve Chairs and The Little Golden Calf, the humorous novels written by Soviet authors Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov. Ostap Bender as if visited this region during his adventurous travels.
To learn more about the history of Cheboksary and Chuvashia, we also recommend to visit National Museum near Efremov Boulevard.
Next, the bayside is worth a stroll, you may go up to visit the Patron Mother monument then too.
Cheboksary.
In 1584, Ivan the Terrible founded the female monastery in Cheboksary; in 1601, Maria Shestova, the grandmother of the first Russian Romanov tsar Mikhail Fedorovich was sent to this monastery. In 1936, the monastery cathedral was destroyed, and this was only in 2013 that Chuvash archeologists discovered the burial of Maria Shestova.
According to these signs, Cheboksary is a hidden pearl of Russia.
In addition, Efremov’s Boulevard, we recommend the shop Chuvashskaya vyshivka for shopping, the goods are very authentic here.
For those who like to travel deeper, we recommend the Museum of Beer and Museum of Chapaev.
Chapaev’s Museum
is dedicated to famous Russian Civil War hero, and has a huge collection related to him: from the fur coat similar to the one he used to wear (you may take a photo wearing it for additional fee) to the artificial moustache which an actor who played Chapaev was wearing in the film about the hero.
Next to the main exhibition there is a small house in which Chapaev was born.
Among other monuments, the city has the one to Andrian Nikolaev, the Soviet cosmonaut of Chuvash origin, and, certainly to Gagarin!
The city has many more places to visit such as the Museum of Tractors, Arts Museum and the river port. In Cheboksary, you will encounter many unexpected things and people.
In addition, just next to Cheboksary you may visit Yoshkar-Ola, Nizhni Novgorod, the small, yet, wonderful Kozmodemyansk, Sviyazhsk, Kazan, and many more.
