Sremski Karlovci, A Day Trip from Belgrade

If you saw more than enough of classic and alternative Belgrade, take a day to see something beyond it. Many head to Novy Sad, which is very nice, but there is also a town of Sremski Karlovci really close to both Belgrade and Novi Sad (reachable by train) which is not less rewarding than any of these big cities.

Starting with the railway station, the town is rather special:

Sremski Karlovci city museum

is located in the Palace Ilion, a former residence of the baronial family Rajačić.

It is an archeological, historical, and art collection. The museum display consists of several units: the peasant cuisine of the late 19th and the early 20th century, paintings by Milić od Mačve, aquarelles by Svetomir Lazić and ceremonial dining room of the family Rajačić.

A separate unit is dedicated to the exhibition about Branko Radičević, the poet of the epoch of Romanticism and the most celebrated student of Karlovačka gimnazija. You may also see the gymnasium on the way, nowadays with the teenagers smoking in the yard.

You may find quite some churches in Sremski Karlovci, such as the Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas at Trg Branka Radičevića:

Take a break at one of the many Sremski Karlovci kafanas, such as Vilenjak, very local and authentic.

Among the small things which may remain unnoticed is the pharmacy at one of the main squares:

If you leave the town center, you will find out Sremski Karlovci specialty: the locals have very creative with beware of dog sings.

Much more fun, however, is the beekeeping museum: make sure you know what time it is open and has guided tours.

On your way back either to Novi Sad or to Belgrade make sure you look at the railroad again and go down to see the Danube next to it.

Although you will not find many proper attractions in Sremski Karlovci, it is a place to visit by itself, to stroll around its streets and watch the Serbian town life. It is extremely recommended!
